FUN BOOKS FOR TWEENS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLERS

Ever wonder what in the world to give a tween or middle school kid as a gift? I am sure most of them want some fancy gadget or cool toy that's out in the market, but have you ever considered giving them a book?  I know, sound kind of boring for them, but this collection of books are the top-rated books among tween readers.  Many of the books below contain story lines that the kids  can relate to, they are funny and full of adventure.

Almost every child that is in elementary (and even middle) school has a "drop and read" program or similar, where they have to read for at least 20-30 minutes a day.  Why not get them a book that will be fun to read?

Also out now, is the most recent of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, "The Getaway."  In this new book, Greg Heffley and his family are getting out of town. Greg and his family decide to escape to a tropical island resort for some much-needed rest and relaxation, as thy try to get away from the cold weather back home.  As fans know, things with the Heffley family never go smoothly.  Sun poisoning, stomach troubles, and venomous critters all threaten to ruin the family's vacation. Can their trip be saved, or will this island getaway end in disaster?

If your child is a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" fan, they are going to love this new adventurous book!  This series is one of the funniest and most enjoyable books for tweens, especially boys.  Boys seem to relate to Greg Heffley, and in turn, they find themselves reading more often to see what happens next.  Reading more is always a win-win!

GREAT BOOKS FOR BOYS

Recently, my husband was at the library and asked me what books he should get for our 7-year old son and I was stumped.  Our son is currently not a big fan of reading but this is a must in our home.  He really only likes to read hockey books and books about wrestling but  I know that this certainly is not the best I can provide him with as a parent.  I couldn't even think of what books to suggest, so of course, I immediately turned to the internet and texted my husband a list.

We try to nurture the love of reading at home, so I know how important it is to find good books that not only he will love but that will teach something and expand his knowledge and vocabulary while having some fun.  I am a firm believer that if the child loves the book, he/she will be interested and develop the love of reading much easier.  We established this with our pre-teen and she now comfortably chooses her own books at a much more advanced level than the average 12-year old.

While browsing the internet for great books for boys, I came across a wonderful list of recommended books for boys on the Kids Activities Blog.  There are some great recommendations such as: Magic Treehouse series, Gruffalo Book Series, Big Nate Outloud and the ever-popular, Captain Underpants.

Our son is currently reading "The New Kid in School (Dragon Slayer Academy) and loving it.  He was only three pages into the book when he told me it was really interesting. (Smiling on the inside)

Again, it is all about choosing the right books.  Once you do that, your child will develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime!
