WHY THE RED STRING ON THE LEFT HAND?

You may have seen someone you know or maybe even yourself wearing a red string on the left hand.  If you wear one, chance are you know why.  If you don't know exactly what it means and why, this post is for you!  Some people like to wear a red or ruby string on their left hand as a kind of lucky charm. It is a custom used to protect one from the evil eye (a.k.a. "stink eye.")

The practice is prominently thought to be related with Kabbalah, (a mystical form of Judaism) and in strict types of Judaism, although many other cultures use it too, such as in: Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Ancient Chinese legend and a few others.  In more recent years, it has become more mainstream. The red string can be worn as a display of confidence, luck, strength, and/or protection. While a few societies have somewhat varying views in regards to the red string, they are comparative in that they see the wearing of red string as a positive thing.

 

There are many cultures with this tradition but the one that resonates with me the most is the one used in Kabbalah.

 

In Kabbalah, the red string is worn on the left hand as a symbol of protection and is derived from the old Hebrew writings, when Rachel, the mother of Joseph, attempted to conceive for quite a long time without success for many years, until she finally had Joseph. She eventually died during labor with her second child, Benjamin.

Her biggest wish was to protect her child from evil, and because of this she is remembered as a sacred mother figure. Along these lines, a ceremonial custom was created in which a red string is tied around Rachel's burial chamber multiple times to inject it with the energy of security and good karma. "In the wake of opening up the string from Rachel's burial chamber, it is then cut into arm band estimated lengths and tied onto the wearer's left wrist while recounting a petition for security. It is accepted that the arm band will at that point protect one from evil."  (Kabbalah .com)
 

Since not everyone can visit Rachel's burial chamber to fold the red string over, it became custom to take the red string and tie it onto the left hand while tying a knot 7 times while setting an intention. "Wearing the red string is not just a tool to keep us from getting the evil eye from the outside, but it is also a reminder for ourselves to not give evil eye to others." (Kabbalah .com)

 

But WHY the LEFT HAND? 

 

The advantage of wearing it on the left hand isn't on the grounds that it is better than the right side. From a Kabbalistic perspective, the left addresses the desire to receive. 

 
According to the chakras of the body, the "left arm is involved with the future or energy coming toward you and your physical body."  The energy from the left center determines what incoming energy you are able to connect with and use. "It literally chooses what you want to use to create your every moment and pulls energy up the arm so you have the necessary energies to create change..." By placing the red string on the left hand, you are, in a sense, protecting your energy!  The color red addresses the desire to receive and the left addresses desire to receive in this way.

From the perspective of Islam, the Hand of Fatima is worn as a lucky symbol, and each finger of the hand has a different attribute.  One is faith, followed by prayer, pilgrimage, charity, and fasting.



For some cultures, protective talismans in the form of Evil Eye bracelets became the most popular form of protection against the intended harm. In Mexico and Central America, bracelets featuring an eye are often placed on babies to ward off the Evil Eye, which could lead to their deaths. Something Can Always Be Done, We Can Always Create Change


All of us at one point or another have faced a situation in which we felt our hands were tied. No matter what we did or said, we knew we couldn’t change the outcome. ”The doctor diagnosed me with…the lawyer said this…the psychic predicted…”

This idea of “it’s over and there’s nothing I can do about it” is one which my teacher (and father) Rav Berg has railed against his entire life. What I have learned from him, and wish to impart to you this week, is there is always something we can do.

Always.

There is a beautiful story in ancient times about King Hizkiyah, King of Judah 715-687 BCE. One day as he lay on his sick bed, he was visited by the Prophet Isaiah. “God has sent me to give you a message. Prepare your affairs, you’re going to die. You are not going to live.”

Quite a message! It wasn’t enough that he came to tell him he was dying, but he made sure to emphasize he was not going to live, (which the kabbalists explain was a code for, there is no hope for him the afterlife, either.) Stunned, the King asks, “Why?”

“Because you did not try to have children in this world.”

The King pleaded with the Prophet, telling him the reason for not attempting to procreate was because he had a prophetic vision in which he saw his offspring causing great destruction to the world.

“Never put stock in what you see!” the Prophet answered. “Even if it is a divine vision. Don’t worry about things beyond, what is not in your control. You have to do what you need to do and what is right.”

The King saw the merit of the lesson, and with renewed hope asked if he could marry the Prophet’s daughter. “Maybe with my merit and your merit combined, the offspring will be righteous.” His solution was rebuffed, the Prophet soberly informing him that the decree was signed, and nothing could be done about it.

To this the King replied, “I don’t want to hear your prophecy! Get out of my house. This is what I have learned from my great-grandfather King David: even if the sword is on one’s neck, he should not give up hope, for he can always draw mercy to change it.

The prophet leaves and Hizkiyah elevates and changes his consciousness and then he prays and his supplication for more life is granted.

This is our lesson. There is never a moment when we should to accept a decree, a prediction, a diagnosis, or anything. In King Hizkiyah’s case, God himself said it’s over and he refuses to accept. And with that consciousness, he changes the decree! If he had accepted the finality of the news he would have not had changed the decree and he would have died.

Notice the difference. This is not just an understanding. It is a consciousness. If you understand the concept but still allow the thought in your mind that yes, maybe it is over, maybe the doctor, lawyer, accountant, psychic is right, then you won’t be able to change it.

You can apply this lesson in the biggest and smallest of ways. Even when it comes to studying Kabbalah there are times when we come up against concepts that seem bigger than us and impenetrable. In these instances we want to apply this consciousness by saying, I can push myself.

This is a consciousness we want to awaken this week. It is not easy to achieve, but it is the key to truly having the power and ability to change anything and everything. There is always something that we can do to create change.
