HOW TO MAKE AUTHENTIC CUBAN COFFEE

This post is for the coffee lovers out there, like me! And if you know, you know that a good Cuban coffee (un cafécito Cubano,) is one of the most delicious coffees you can have and will keep you wired for a while.

Growing up in Miami and in a Cuban household, coffee was an integral part of life and social gatherings.  I remember Saturday mornings as a kid, watching cartoons and having a mug full of café con leche (with Cuban coffee of course,) and Cuban bread with butter. Still my favorite breakfast!  I am not even going to address whether that was a healthy choice or not. LOL!  Even now, I know that drinking too much coffee is not the healthiest option for me, but I LOVE it!

I love to drink coffee, especially a café con leche, but I don't usually make Cuban coffee myself. I had a family member tell me recently how difficult it was to find good Cuban coffee in their city, and it got me thinking, maybe it's easier (and cheaper) to just make it at home.  It might not be as delicious, let's say, as a "cortadito" (see below for recipe) on the corner of Versailles in Miami but you can get pretty authentic café if you learn how to make it properly and have the right tools and ingredients! Personally, the Cuban coffee I always had growing up was Cafe Bustelo.  You can choose whichever you like but try to stick to real Cuban coffee, so you can get the authentic taste.

So, in an effort to get you started on having your own cup of delicious café Cubano, here is a video that shows you the steps on how to make it at home.  The only thing different from when I was growing up is that now, there is the option of using an electric Cuban coffee maker, which I think is a great idea. You can see that in the second video below.  I think I will actually order one for my own home and get my Cuban coffee tradition going again. And another interesting option that they didn't have when I was growing up or even in recent years, is a "cafetera" with a handle!  Now, that's convenient. I can't even tell you the number of times I burned my hand trying to twist the bottom of the coffee maker.

Below is a more detailed tutorial I found on YouTube on how to make Cuban coffee:

Once you've made your Cuban coffee you can drink it straight up from one of those little cups they serve at restaurants or a shot glass or if you want to be fancy or having guests coming over and you want to impress them with your Cuban swag, you can serve the café in classic "tasitas." And if you prefer a more latte-like experience, you can add frothed milk, and have it as a café con leche.  Just pick a mug and enjoy!

The electric Cuban coffee maker mentioned in the video (shown below) comes with an option to make 3 or 6 cups.
