14 POSITIVE PARENTING STRATEGIES TO RAISE A HAPPY CHILD

Parenting is one of the most fulfilling jobs imaginable. Yet, it can also be one of the most difficult - mainly because you are tasked with raising a tiny person who is helpless, dependent on your guidance, and will be fully formed by the time they can decide on their own. But there is hope! Significantly improved parenting styles have been created in recent years to make this process easier for both parents and children.

Positive parenting is a unique style of parenting that provides a relaxing, nurturing environment where children can feel secure and develop as individuals. Children need both structure and freedom in their lives but can be exposed to unconditional love (i.e., not being disciplined by varying degrees of anxiety, anger, or frustration) - which is the heart of positive parenting.

Children may not have words to express their feelings. They are more likely to act out their anxiety and stress through their behavior. As parents, you must teach your children discipline in a positive manner to strengthen your bond with your kids. So here are the best positive parenting strategies you can use.

Positive Parenting Strategies to Raise a Happy Child

1. The Early Years Matter

The early years are crucial for children, especially in the first five years of their lives. During this time, children can store and learn the basic information that enables them to carry out certain tasks. During this period, parents must ensure that they instill confidence and trust in their child, which will facilitate child cooperation, healthy interaction, and social skills.

2. Follow a Routine

Babies and small children love routine because it makes everyday activities easier. Schedule a time each day where your child will have fun with a routine like feeding and rocking the baby to sleep, reading bedtime books together, or playing a game. These simple activities will teach your child confidence and happiness, which will help your child thrive mentally, socially, and physically. In addition, regular meals encourage the healthy growth of children by keeping them full of energy throughout the day.

3. Learn the Basics

It is essential to understand that kids grow every minute of the day and that particular tasks like crawling, sitting, and standing are age-specific. Provide your kid time and space to be ready to cross a certain milestone. There's no need to rush! Each small child is unique and grows at different paces. What's ideal is not to compare your small child with other kids, and that can be one of the best parenting strategies parents can learn.

4. Be Good Role Models

Children love to imitate their parents, so provide a role model by demonstrating good behavior and being a dependable leader for your child to follow. Practice what you preach by being generous around the house, for instance, offering to pick up toys as well as helping your kids with their homework. Or, If you want your kid to wash their hands after playing outside, you should wash your hands too after getting back from your work.

5. Concentrate on Daily Chores

It is important to include your child in the day-to-day activities you do at home. Getting your kid involved can help them get used to daily routines that involve chores. Let them play with your keys, let them clean up their toys, and sit on the toilet seat! It will help them understand how to control themselves and develop confidence in doing household chores for later life.

6. Bond Over Fitness

Exercise as a family can be an enjoyable experience for you and your small children. Take up activities that you all like, for instance, swimming, playing basketball, or attending dance classes. Spending at least an hour every day on exercise and physical activity can make a world of difference to children's overall development and growth.

7. Family Meal Time

Eating a meal together can help to strengthen the bonds between parents and children. All the important features of positive parenting strategies can be encapsulated into that family meal, building a positive impression on your kid's future. It is an ideal time to engage in conversations and discuss each member's day and how it went. Mealtimes are excellent for meaningful conversations and laughter. Family mealtime is also an excellent opportunity to foster early healthy eating habits in your child.

8. Invest in Yourself

You are the most important parent as you are bound to shape your child's future. So make sure that you get enough sleep and manage your stress levels. If you are out of balance, then it will be hard for you to create a healthy and secure environment for your small child to live in. It is important to regularly shower, keep yourself fit with exercise and eat well because these things will help your child regulate their moods.

9. Work as a Partner with Your Child

Children are more likely to be more cooperative with their parents when they feel as though they are a part of the family. When spending time with your child, talk and interact naturally. Children can't tell you how they feel, but it is important to listen and respond according to how they are feeling. Often, children don't know what needs to be repaired or what is broken or damaged but only know that their world has shifted from under them, and the way forward is unclear.

10. Let Your Parenthood Define You

Another parenting strategy you can follow is to manage your own time accordingly. Let your coworkers or colleagues know that you have a young child waiting for you at home. So instead of expecting your coworkers to understand that you need to leave on time, set your boundaries yourself, right from the start. Be a wise worker and use your time wisely to finish your work and have adequate time for your family.

11. Grandparents Are Blessings

A grandparent can be a great support system for a young couple with small children. They can help babysit, allow you to go out for dinner or a date night, help you with laundry, housecleaning, and cooking meals when you are too tired. Above all, grandparents have years of experience, so they offer their wisdom and help guide parents through the maze of parenting strategies. The more interaction with the extended family, the better your kid's overall development.

12. Kids Need Kids

Another parenting strategy is to allow your children to be around other children. You can arrange playdates with your kid's friends so that they can share experiences, get to know each other better, and learn to become socially conscious. They develop language skills and learn new activities from each other. They also learn how to be a friend, share things with friends and get along well with others.

13. Understand and Acknowledge the Disappointments of Your Kids

Good parenting strategies involve understanding and acknowledging the disappointments of your kids. Ask them what is bothering them and why they are sad because that will give you an insight into their world. It will help you to understand your kid's minds better, increase their confidence and make them feel more secure. It is important to listen to your kid's stories, show appreciation for their efforts, assure them that they did a good job, and be proud of it.

14. Self-Control for Screen Time

There is no denying that video games and television can play a major role in child development. But the parents must monitor how much time the kids spend on screen and their emotional reactions after playing such addictive games. The screen time should be minimal, as too much screen time during childhood can have a negative impact on children's well-being as adults. You should also communicate to your children what you think is alright for them to watch or play and which activities are okay to avoid altogether.

Parenting is indeed tough, but it is priceless when you see how your kid grows up to become a responsible and thoughtful human being. While raising your kids, you may consider following these strategies to make their childhood more enjoyable and help them become responsible adults.

POPCORN, BOOKS & ONE CHILD'S IDEA

There is nothing more rewarding as a parent than watching your children succeed.  When I came across the story about this young man, I immediately reached out to his mom to get more information.

I agreed to do a story on him because I feel that is it so inspirational for other children and is also very empowering for parents.

Sometimes, we try to do everything under the sun to get our kids on the right path.  What I have learned from this particular story, is that if you give a child the right tools and empower them to believe in themselves, anything is possible!

For 10-year old Karter Johnson, reading is his super power.  Karter has been an avid reader since the age of 2! As Karter grew older he continued his love of reading - for him it was like watching a movie without the screen time. One day, Karter shared his concerns with his mom, when a letter was sent to his house by his home-school partnership informing his family, "that if a child was not reading on level by the end of third grade they would not be promoted to the 4th grade." Karter’s mom, was not concerned at all about her child and dismissed the letter. In fact, she threw it out. But, 8-year old Karter was a little more concerned about this situation and started asking questions.

As a result, Karter took it upon himself to do an internet search about the literacy problem kids face. He discovered that reading aloud to children can help to improve their reading. Karter made it his business to help fight the literacy problem that some kids face and made a commitment to be there for kids who need someone to read with.

Cichon, Karter's mom says, "Karter has always had an entrepreneurial mindset, and even loved selling fresh popped popcorn at vending events to make money."

So when he learned about the reading problem that kids were facing, he got an idea. That little idea was the “kernel that POPPED“ into his successful and popular business, (Universal Popcorn presents,) Popcorn and Books

Popcorn and Books is a reading program that encourages kids to read more and to help them build up the love of reading. Through his monthly subscription book box, Karter is able to send fun and exciting books to children all over the country.

In the box, he includes popcorn for the kids to enjoy while they read. He has made it his business to help fight the literacy problem that some kids face and to be there for kids who need someone to read with.

Karter was set to kick off his reading program in March of 2020 by engaging in an in-school reading tour, but the Coronavirus impacted his plans. However, that did not discourage Karter! He decided to take his reading tour online and began reading in his Facebook group, Universal Popcorn instead. His group currently has 300 members and growing! Now, if that doesn't show initiative and perseverance, I don't know what does. Sometimes when one door closes, a better one opens up!

In addition to reading the books, Karter also began to do book reviews. As a result, many self-published authors and children’s book writers have begun sending him books to review- talk about being a little entrepreneur! Although his plans changed somewhat due to the unforeseen circumstance, the response to his online reading program has been overwhelming.

After being in business for a year and a half, Popcorn and Books is now a 501c3 non-profit organization. Through that organization Karter has launched, Build A Kid’s Library’ where he and his team send high-quality, age-appropriate books to kids in Detroit, MI. and its surrounding areas once a month at no cost to their families! How amazing is that?!

Build-A-Kid's Library encourages kids to read more and enjoy reading - one book at a time! It also provides kids with books to build their own home library.

When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Karter said, “I want to be an author when I grow up” And then he added, “Well, I don’t have to wait until I grow up to be an author I can do that now!”  Six months later by the end of 2020, Karter Johnson became a published author at the age of 9 years old! Karter, contributed to a chapter in the book, The Science Behind It Vol. 2 - Formulating Success While Impacting The World.  It is a book where 10 young entrepreneurs tell the story of their entrepreneurial journey beginning at a young age.

Karter also recently completed a certified speaker program and gave his first TEDx Talk!

As you can see, Karter Johnson is an amazing young man, who has certainly turned his passion into purpose! I couldn't help but smile the whole time, as I read more about this young CEO|Entrepreneur|Avid Reader, turned business mogul.  Karter is a shining example of excellent parenting and an innate business mindset.  It is not often, we come across 10-year olds who actually make the moves to change the world!  In this case, one book at a time!

I hope you are just as inspired by this young man as I was. Congratulations to Karter and his mom for being real difference makers!

Get YOUR kids their own subscription box to Popcorn and Books and get them going with their OWN kids library too!

8 WAYS TO HELP KIDS DEVELOP A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Check out these 8 Ways to Help Kids Develop a Positive Attitude

A positive outlook can be the key to success in life. Those who focus on the opportunities around them, rather than the frustrations or setbacks that may come their way, are more likely to become thriving adults. This article will provide you with 10 ways to turn a kid's eye toward the positive. As a parent, you can use the following tips to inspire kids to be happy and successful.

1. Help Them Give And Receive

One of the most powerful ways to foster a positive outlook is to teach children that they can always help others and that others can always help them. Children learn that every day by helping their parents, teachers and other family members in their daily lives. Helping others is not only a valuable life skill, but it's also good for social development. It teaches the ethics of sharing and working together for common goals, such as giving and sharing friendship, life lessons and material possessions.

2. Encourage Their Interests

Encouraging a child's interests is another way to foster a positive outlook. Introduce them to books like animal books for kids, toys, games and other things that suit their unique likes and dislikes. You can also find positive role models to inspire your kids to pursue their interests. Ask relatives, friends, neighbors, teachers and other adults to share stories about their accomplishments—in school, sports, the arts or another area of interest. Encouraging your children's interests will foster a positive outlook and encourage them to get involved in activities that offer them excitement and joy.

3. Help Them Find The Silver Lining

Some days are just plain hard. When kids have a bad day, help them understand that everyone has their good days and bad days. Adopt the attitude that every day is an opportunity to improve yourself. Encouraging your children to take responsibility for their actions is an action-oriented approach to life. Help your children find the silver lining in every situation by occasionally reminding them of their accomplishments or giving praise when they make positive accomplishments. You can also still be encouraging when you're not feeling well by helping them think of the bright side of situations.

4. Be Positive

One of the most important things to do to encourage your children is to be optimistic about everything. Your kids will almost always pick up on your negativity if you are down in the dumps or angry most of the time. So encouraging them with positive comments will motivate them to be confident and happy when around others, making it easier to have a positive outlook.

5. Teach Them The Value Of Education

Kids need to learn the value of education because it will serve them throughout their lives if they decide to pursue higher education. Encourage your children to accomplish their schoolwork by setting a positive example. Be sure they understand that education is essential because it can lead to a better life and that their hard work will pay off in the long run. It is also a good idea to let them know that you will be proud of them no matter what they choose as a career.

6. Listen To Them

It is important to show them the same respect and attention you would give anyone else. Make sure children understand that you are interested in them as people, not their accomplishments. Listen to them, be there for them when they need you and tell them that they are important.

7. Teach Them To Be Self Reliant

Many kids fail to develop a positive outlook because they can't seem to achieve success without you or your resources. Therefore, it's important that you encourage them to achieve all of their goals on their own and that they continue to learn valuable lessons from failure. In most cases, their lack of initiative means that they weren't ready for the next step in life.

8. Be Realistic

Encourage your children to have a good outlook by being realistic about the things they want. For example, you do not want to encourage your child to have an unrealistic expectation that she can get her grades up overnight or that you will be able to take her on a five-star vacation that costs a lot of money if you can't. It's important to educate your kids on how realistic certain things are while encouraging them to try their best and work hard for what they want.

Always remember that it's not always easy to make your kids happy. It's also important to understand that many kids tend to focus on their problems and insecurities more than their strengths when they are young. However, with an optimistic outlook, it will be easier for them when they are older and will deal with any possible setbacks in life. Encouraging your children in everything early on will help them develop a positive outlook that can help them during their entire lives.

HOW TO RAISE SMART AND SUCCESSFUL KIDS

The early childhood of your kids sets the foundation for their upcoming life. To raise intelligent and successful kids in the 21st century, you need to concentrate on their character building apart from their academics. But how do you begin with that? Well, here we are sharing 5 character skills that are most important to learn for your kids:

  1. Curiosity
Albert Einstein once said, “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious”. Being curious is a virtue that starts all kinds of discoveries in the world. It makes your kids ask questions and seek reasons which in turn enhance their overall knowledge and intelligence. It also keeps them humble. To keep the curiosity alive in your kids, ask them various questions. Try to teach them something new every day and take them to new places.
  1. Social Awareness
The human being is a social animal. To co-exist with other people, we all need to learn social skills like communication, empathy, cooperation, etc. These traits help in your kid’s school performance and earn them good friends. Some kids are born with an outgoing personality. But no need to worry if your kids are somewhat reserved. You can raise social and smart kids by arranging more play dates and regularly taking them to social gatherings.
  1. Responsibility
First of all, they should learn to take their own responsibility. You can also call it being independent. This quality comes in handy when they leave home for higher education and live on their own. Sense of responsibility makes people successful in studies, work, and personal life as well. To make your kids smart, aware, and responsible, let them make some small decisions and teach them to be accountable for their actions.
  1. Self-control
Self-control and discipline prevent your kids from going in the wrong direction. They can make the right choices even in stressful situations. Although teaching a character skill like self-control to kids is an “easier said than done” job. Kids act without thinking. They scream and cry to get what they want. You need to be strict with them in such scenarios. However, you should also reward them later for resisting their temptation for positive reassurance.
  1. Open-mindedness
Open-mindedness is to think beyond your own opinion. Kids must realize early on that people all over the world think and behave differently. Open-mindedness is a quality that doesn’t let your kids assume and judge people in general. That means they can be free of any prejudice and can easily fit in any social circle globally wherever their life path takes them. Also, inculcate a growth mindset in your kids to make them unafraid of any challenge.

Parting Words
All these character skill lessons first come from parents to kids. Be patient and resilient in teaching these life lessons to raise a well-rounded, successful kid in all aspects of life. You can also enroll your kids in online new-age skills classes to enhance their creativity, communication skills, and growth mindset.

URGE TO SAVE MONEY VS. LIVING LIFE ONLY ONCE

Like we all know, money is something that runs the world. It is a said that money helps us fulfill all our dreams wants & wishes. It is an important ingredient for the recipe to have a balanced life.

"We as parents want our kids to know everything. This is probably because
we are scared that in the competition not knowing enough can be a setback
for them later on. But as parents explaining money and its importance to
them is something that we all must do. One appropriate way of doing this is
to help them open a bank account for themselves." (Source: Confused Parent)
There is a general misconception that investments and insurance are the same. It is very important for us, as parents to understand that once a baby is born, it is important to take insurance for his/her safety and also. Now, when it comes to investments, it is purely your choice as to when and which investment option you choose.
During my childhood days, I had the urge to save money and deposit it in the bank to see my savings account grow. A monthly visit to the bank close to my house was quite a fun. During those days a deposit of $ 0.71 by a teenager was a big deal.
During festivities like Christmas, Thanksgiving or even weddings and maybe a visit to my grandparent’s place, there would be an added bonuses for us. Honestly, a sum of $1.42 would sound so paltry now, but a similar sum during my days would make us feel like a millionaire. Our expenses those days would jot down to a random comic like The Complete MAUS which would cost around $3 for the love of art, or M & M chocolate was available for just $4.
Another memory of carefully spending our  saved money on buying stuff for favorite game of cricket or probably nag your dad to buy you the latest hand held game like Donkey Kong, or to get us a bicycle etc. Nostalgic as it may sound, I feel we were a happy and a lot more content with what we had.
A couple of decades later, I find myself in a different scenario. Where “living life to the fullest” is the new norm by buying things we don’t need, only to keep up with peer pressure and new normal laid down by the today’s society.
Spend Vs Save

Well, kids are reflection of their parents overload of pampering due to lack of dedicated time has made things so easy for the kids to get their wishes fulfilled.  “NO” used to be the final word what we used to hear from our parents when we demanded for anything. But try using that two letter word on your child now and you stand a risk of being labeled as a "miser." Well, who would like to be called that? Expecting children to value money would be far-fetched if they get what they need/want/wish with such ease.
Money doesn’t grow on trees. So, a few months back, I tried this simple experiment on my kids to teach the Budgeting or to discipline them. I had told them that from the following month they would be getting a pocket money of 200 bucks per month. They both were super excited to hear that, but I told them that they were to buy all that they wanted from their pocket money, irrespective of a fancy or an ordinary thing from their cotton candies to bicycles .
A couple of months passed by and one fine day we visited the super market to buy some household stuff. The regular visits used to be a tug of war between my kids and my wife. They would have the cart loaded with what their favorite items and my wife would have a tough time trying to convince them that it was such a waste of money. But the scene that day was surprisingly calm. I asked my better half “What happened to the kids?” She said, before coming here she warned the kids that whatever they pick up from the store would be paid from their own pocket money.
This exercise re-iterated my faith in my belief that most of what kids learn today come from their parents, be it to value money or practice saving or teaching them a disciplined life. But a straight forward question we need to ask ourselves, have we done enough here?  If not, then why blame them for what they haven’t been taught at this young age.
