MEET LISSETTE: The Woman behind Mommy Warrior

Life, Wellness, Family & a Little Bit of Everything

If you have been following my blog for a while, then you probably already know some of these things, but for my new readers and followers on social media, I would like to introduce myself.

I am the person behind the Mommy Warrior Laldy blog.

I’m a South Florida native, a mom, bonus mom, and a very proud Nana. If you know me IRL, then you know all those details. Family has always been my greatest joy and my biggest “why.”

I love my family, sunflowers, sunsets, the beach, ice hockey, puns, chocolate chip mint ice cream, pepperoni pizza, nice cold tequila and all kinds of music.

I spent 10 years in the music business, and they were the best years I ever had professionally (and personally too.) I made wonderful memories, met some incredible recording artists, attended the best parties, made some amazing friendships and met the man who gave me the best kids and bonus kids.

Professionally, I’m a social media specialist, digital marketer, content creator, graphic designer, and storyteller. I love helping small businesses and entrepreneurs via social media and marketing, find their voice, build meaningful brands, and connect with people in authentic ways. Creativity has always been one of my favorite languages.

Outside of marketing, my passion is helping people thrive through creativity, connection, wellness, and the energy we choose to bring into the world. One of the ways is via holistic wellness. I’m fascinated by frequency-charged nutrition, cellular wellness, neuroplasticity, and the simple daily habits + mindset that help us live healthier, happier, more intentional lives.

You’ll often find me sharing ideas on personal growth, kindness, gratitude, resilience, and the science (and sometimes the mystery) behind becoming the best version of ourselves. I don’t believe wellness is about perfection; I believe it’s about making better choices one day at a time.

I’m also a passionate hockey mom and honestly, hockey has become part of who I am. From countless hours at the rink to cheering on the Florida Panthers and supporting my son’s hockey journey, the sport has taught me lessons about teamwork, perseverance, humility, and community. It even inspired one of my newest creative adventures that I am working on (coming soon…) a brand celebrating the lifestyle and culture that makes hockey so special.

Life hasn’t always been easy. I’ve experienced challenges in my life that changed my perspective forever, the death of my mother at such an early age (she passed at age 50,) becoming a living kidney donor, surviving a brain tumor, and battling autoimmune issues, bundled under the MCTD category, coupled with fibromyalgia.

Those experiences taught me not to take today for granted and reminds me that our greatest strength often grows from the moments we never expected to face. It is through all those experiences that I have become who I am today and continuously trying to be a better version of myself.

Today, you’ll usually find me creating content for my brands, designing graphics, writing, learning something new, spending time with family, enjoying the Florida sunshine, or working on projects that help and inspire people to live better and with more purpose.

I leave you with a few words of wisdom: Stay curious. Never stop learning. Protect your peace above all else. Do the things that bring you joy. Always remember you have the power to be happy. You have choices. Choose wisely. And never underestimate the power of the energy YOU bring into a room.

Thanks for being here. Whether you’re following for wellness, marketing, hockey, inspiration, or simply because we crossed paths somehow, I’m truly glad you’re here. I hope that I have helped make a ripple somehow for the better.

Thank you for your continued support. And if you are here for marketing or wellness, let’s build something meaningful together.

LOOKING FOR THE LIGHT IN TOWER MOMENTS

"Sometimes it’s difficult to be positive, and to be patient or to comprehend the challenges we are faced with, in those "tower moments" of life that make us feel overwhelmed. Those "tower moments" are moments that can feel like everything around you is crumbling, and getting more difficult at every turn, but the key to overcoming these moments, is to make space for more light to enter, to move to a new higher frequency with an upward and forward movement. It is important to always keep moving forward towards that light. ("Nunca para atrΓ‘s como el cangrejo!”) Moving forward is not the same as moving on. You can “move on,” physically, but emotionally, you may not have moved forward. Forward is progress.

It is where we need to go as things change and move in different directions with the ups & downs of life. We need to learn to look for the light and move forward in progress. And that doesn’t mean the “light” they talk about at death. When I refer to the light, I am referring to the light of LIFE, of love, of hope, of motivation, of kindness, of compassion, of happiness, of better days yet to come. It is the light that sparks you from the inside out!

We all have that "light" within in us, but sometimes we just need that spark or switch turned back on. Often, we forget who we really are supposed to be because we got lost in the chaos of life. It takes conscious effort to look for the things that “light you up,” and bring you joy. It also takes plenty of self-love and personal development to nurture your soul. We are a work in progress.

Ask yourself this? If you treated a project at work or at school with attention, care, and focus to make sure it was successful and turned out well, why wouldn't you do that for yourself? If you are doing it right, when you complete a job, a project or different levels in school/college, you keep going up and forward in progress. You either work towards a goal, good grades, a promotion or different levels of success, so why wouldn't you put in the same or better effort to the ultimate project in your life? YOURSELF!

If you don't put yourself first, why not? Maybe you are used to helping everyone else with their own life, while you feel stuck...but guess what? When we feel stuck in life, it is because we are not putting in the work. We are not putting in the work to be better in our relationships, our jobs, our health, our friendships - none of it. Don't get me wrong, I am not preaching - this is as much life advice as it is self-talk, when I write. Sometimes our hearts can't accept what the Universe has planned for us, but it is our job to go the extra mile and figure things out, not all at once but throughout our lifetime.

We things feel like they are falling apart, we are just letting old patterns of behavior steer the wheel and become complacent with the status quo. Complacency is a killer. That doesn't mean that life has to be perfect to be wonderful. It means, that we learn how to maneuver through those tough tower moments and find something wonderful along the journey. It is possible, even in the darkest of days.

Personally, when I had days when I felt "blah" and didn't feel well and had migraines almost every single day and my mood was just meh, I used the help of C-B-D, and personal development. It is difficult to be positive and feel hope when you feel like crap! Everyone is going through something and we all cope in different ways. Some people smoke weed, some people take anti-depressants, some people become obsessed with exercise or work and some people just suck it up.  What I know is that no matter how we deal with those "dark days," individually, we are not here on Earth to just get by and complain about the rough moments in our lives. Like the saying goes, "We are here to thrive, not just survive."

And News Flash: No one gets out alive! We're not usually here for a long time, (unless you are my grandmother! LOL!) So, we should make every effort to make it the best time possible.

Actually, what I have learned, is that we are here on Earth to learn to manipulate energy and become better versions of ourselves. If you are religious, then perhaps that better version is the goal of becoming God-like. And if you believe in Source (higher power,) then you know that we are all God and have that power within us to achieve a higher frequency and achieve Christ-consciousness.

But let me not digress into religion...the bottom line is you have to do what lights you up.

You (and by you, I mean you, me, we,) have to make a conscious effort to look for the things that “light us up,” and brings joy. Even with all the craziness and frustrations, we go through in life, (love, work, politics and so on,) it is about surrounding yourself with people who make you want to be better and do better. It is about moving away from the dark energies and things that bring you down.  It is about appreciating those people, who genuinely love you and treat you well, who check on you and want to see you succeed in life. There is plenty of good in the world, we just have to look for it! And there is also great abundance in the world, (if only greed and power would take a back seat.) Love, abundance, kindness, it's all there waiting for you, for me, for us! We all have the power to be happy, if we choose to look for the light in the dark moments - it just has to be a very conscious effort at first.

Looking for the light is about finding “your tribe” and thriving there, whether that be with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, like-minded online friends, teammates, and so forth. Having a tribe is about having that support that we all need at one time or another in our lives. And if you don’t like the “tribe” you have, get a new one or start your own! Reach out to me and will help you find one.

There will always be some cloudiness, and even some really dark days, but it is in that “darkness,” that we must learn to manipulate our Energy, so that we can attract the good, (“the light”) and the higher frequency in life, which IMO, is THE goal. That higher frequency is in reference to a higher spiritual plane, not a physical state. And with that said, our physical state is also an integral part of our journey.

It is true that health is indeed our greatest wealth, and without that we have nothing, which makes it that much more difficult to stay motivated and happy when we are not in good health or not feeling our “best.”

This is why we should try to do everything in our POWER, to be as willing and as healthy as possible to put in the WORK: mind, body & soul.  Feeling good and having a positive mindset is hard work. No one said it would be easy; but it is definitely worth it, when you are able to shift your paradigm - to change your thinking and perspective from what it has always been, that is progress - that is success. It is learning to have a growth mindset over the same old stagnant mindset we have been conditioned with, that says things are the way they are, and that they have to stay that way.

This is not true. We can change our mindset at any time we make the DECISION to do so. We have the POWER! The power to be happy, to be healthy, to be kind, to spread love and happiness and to make everyday count.

We are not here on Earth to just survive and get by. In my opinion, we are here to make a difference, to make a positive impact, somewhere along the course of our lives.

At some point in life, you may have inspired or motivated someone and not even known it. And sometimes, you might even have to “toot your own horn,” to keep you going in a positive direction with self-talk, personal development, daily affirmations and this blog.

So, even if you feel things are crumbling around you sometimes or getting more difficult, and those “tower moments,” seem to be growing, remember that we don’t grow or learn when things are easy. We grow when we learn to overcome the obstacles with grace and grit. We learn when we can recognize the lessons, as difficult as some of those may be.

All the chaos we feel, is the Earth, (Gaia, G-d, Source) shifting us to become better versions of ourselves, especially with what is going on in the world around us. It is a time of clearing out. It is a time of new beginnings and new cycles. It is a time of choosing love over hate. It is a time to choose the light over the darkness.

Every generation has had its turmoil and ups and downs but at the end of the day, the goal of humanity is to evolve and become better.

My advice is that we ALL need to "do more of what makes us happy every day" and be like a sunflower - always looking for the light, that brings you joy and happiness. Stand tall, even if sometimes you may feel like you are wilting. Water yourself with love, good food, good times and good people around you! Keep looking for the light when you face those tower moments that feel insurmountable.

The happier we can be individually, the more we affect the collective in a positive way and that is how we can begin to change the world - by being the change!

It’s all part of the process.  Inhale Love, exhale negativity."

MENTAL WELLNESS AND MOMENTUM

DID YOU KNOW that the mental health field will be the next trillion dollar industry?!😳

I have to share this with you all! You all know I love social media, love marketing, love the health field and love making a difference!!! Well, I have partnered with a mental wellness company that is helping me do all of that! This momentum is taking over just like they said it would!

I am living in my purpose and ready to make a difference! I am so excited to be a part of something like this where:

  • People are winning more than a paycheck!
  • People are making healthy changes in their life and improving their overall health and mental wellness!!
  • People who have never had success in #NWM are now having more success than ever before!
  • There is a massive movement in the area of gut-brain connection!
  • Moms are able to stay home with their kids and earn some extra income!

πŸš€ We have access to a system that is easily duplicated. Literally, a step by step action plan to make sharing these products and business model so easy. All you need to do is plug in.

Our corporate & marketing team is awesome! Some of the platforms and systems they have created are incredibly user-friendly and super easy to navigate for customers as well! The marketing tools and sale sheets are on point and you guys know I LOVE sales & marketing!

I am blown away that there is actually a company out there that encompasses all the things I love and is having massive success!🀯 They are totally having an upward turn and the momentum is building.

I love being able to be a part of something where I can make a difference in people's lives, not only with their gut health but especially with their mental wellness. It is such a big difference to be surrounded with like-minded people, who want to serve other people in the right way and are authentic with their desire to help others as well. πŸ’œ
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is so much potential with these products and opportunity with this mental wellness company, which actually isn't shocking because there is such a huge need in the area of mental health. Never in my lifetime, have I seen as many people (specifically in America) in such need to find something to improve their MENTAL WELLNESS (re: stress, anxiety, depression etc...) and overall health during these very trying and uncertain times. I am still a big proponent of using CBD as an alternative health option but what I have learned during my health journey and research, is that the gut-brain connection is so powerful, as it relates to our overall health, that these products are literally life-changers!

After all the health issues I (and some of my family members have been through) it is my mission to help change the world for the better. If I can help just ONE person that is one less person who has to struggle and one person whose life will have improved! It is an incredible feeling when a customer shares their improvements and texts on how much better they are feeling.  The truth is so many people struggle silently, while others are crying for help, whether it is with their mental health, sleep, anxiety, depression, gut health issues or weight-loss resistance.

How many of us have felt like we are in an endless cycle of trying to lose weight, trying to feel better, only to end up feeling depressed when we don't lose the weight we want and then the vicious circle begins of poor eating that results in poor gut health. At the end of the day, I think we all want the same things, to be HAPPY and to be HEALTHY! And we want the same for our loved ones.

It is time to focus on feeling well from the inside out!  The mental wellness company has an amazing line-up of products that can help with all the issues mentioned above and more.

And it’s all happening just like they told me it would! Our team stats just blew me away:

πŸ’œ 263 people earned free product in the first 15 days in the (last) month.
πŸ’œ 121 earned an additional $500 with a special program we offer monthly.
πŸ’œ 1730 new people joined our team (509 of them were business building partners)
πŸ’œ We celebrated 293 promotions on our team!

The benefits that these products offer are amazing
:

 ✔️ Increases energy levels
 ✔️ Nourishes good gut bacteria
✔️ Improves your microbiome
✔️ Helps control appetite
✔️ Supports healthy muscle mass
✔️ Increases feeling of fullness

We can all benefit from these supplements especially if you are looking to improve your gut microbiome, overall health and mental wellness! If you haven't read up on it yet....please go research (or Google) about the GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION!

If you know anything about momentum, you know it is all about TIMING! You don’t want to miss this!! The time is now! "You don't find the happy life, you make it!"

If you are interested in improving your gut health and mental wellness, let’s chat!! I have something for you and everyone in your family (kids & teens!)

GRATITUDE - THE GIFT OF LIFE

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to appreciate that everyday I wake up and every birthday I celebrate, is a gift!

Life they say, is all about finding your purpose. Not too sure yet if this is my purpose, but my passion is in writing, motivating and helping others to choose better days for their mind, body and soul and often times, I do it by sharing it on my blog and social media platforms. I like to believe that there may be some people out there that I inspire or help make their day a little better simply by sharing some motivational words or coaching them through difficult times, even if sometimes, I too, get lost in my empathy and need to "heal the world," so to speak. My path to wellness has been paved through gratitude and alternative health options and I want to share it with the world.  As the years go by, and thankfully, birthdays come & go, I feel like I am running out of time. If life has taught us anything recently is that, we indeed do not have time promised to us.

Life is a snippet of moments and I have been blessed with some great ones!  It's funny that with all with all the days we have lived, when we reflect back on life, it is only a few snapshots in our minds that really stand out. Sometimes, it is the most innocuous of memories that come to mind! It is those memories that we can look back on and judge our lives. Good? Bad? Happy? Sad?  A little mix of it all?

When we learn to live in the mix of chaos and love, and in the balance of good and bad; happy and sad; ups and downs…we can conquer anything!

And when it’s all said and done, I want to be remembered for the life I gave, the lives I brought into this Universe and hopefully, for the difference I made while I was on this Earth.

The greatest gift I have is my children and hopefully someday they will know how much they are loved and how important it is to make a mark in the world in a positive way. It is why we are ALL here! “Children (and grandchildren) are the messages we leave behind to a time we may not see.”

My advice to them and to you, my friend is:

Live each day with a grateful heart! Tell the people you love, how you feel about them while they are alive, be kind to each other, make an effort to make a positive impact in the world - I know sometimes, it gets hard. Do what you love and love who you want. And if you can't be with who you want, learn to be alone!  Learn to love yourself regardless of whether you have a partner or not! Do what makes you happy, yet never forget that empathy and compassion are an integral part of living in society.

Remember that age is nothing but a number and time is promised to no one. Every new day is an opportunity to start over if you need a "re-do." Never forget that life is most definitely a gift and when you get the chance to give it away, pray that you have lived your life to the fullest and leave a legacy behind that you can be proud of and if you get the chance to leave a piece of you behind, (save a life or two,) be come an organ donor!

Live your life as if everyday was your last because time is precious. This teaches you to be grateful for everything you have in the moment. While you are living your life, don’t forget to stop and smell the (proverbial) flowers!
And if you have to pick a flower, pick a sunflower always standing tall and looking for the light!
πŸ’«
Always be safe and be smart with your choices and live your best life! ALWAYS trust your instincts and the “little voice in your mind,” that sometimes tells you “that’s not a good idea.” That could be your guardian angel or simply the voice of reason - don’t ignore it.

Always remember that YOU have the Power to be Happy, to be healthy and to be kind. You hold the key to many different doors...choose your path wisely and don’t ever be afraid to start something new if you feel stuck. You will only regret the opportunities you missed. Take a chance - you won’t know until you try.

What you do matters.

With all its clichΓ©s and quotes, I have learned that life can be wonderful, even if it is not perfect. Sometimes, it is through the hardest and most difficult days, that we have the most growth and feel so deeply and so passionately, the love of our friends, our family and our community.

Love your journey!

πŸ₯°

Cheers to another year of life! The gift of life. Thank you for being a part of my journey!Love Always....Lissette

GETAWAY TO THE KEYS - ISLA BELLA BEACH RESORT

https://www.islabellabeachresort.com/resort/
Everybody needs a little time away from home, especially if you are a mom, with the craziness of getting the kids off to school, working, helping the kids with their homework, domestic life, business life, all of it! It is important to give yourself some time off, even if it is just a weekend!

I am really looking forward to my upcoming "ladies/moms weekend" getaway, which will be in the Florida Keys!  As a Florida native, I have to admit, I do not get down to the Keys often enough.

Now, I have a great excuse and place to visit! There is a new resort, located in the middle of the Florida Keys. It is called Isla Bella Beach Resort. It is specifically located on Knights Key, which is midway between Key West and Key Largo, only a 2-hour drive from Miami and a 1-hour drive from Key West International Airport.

If you have never visited the Keys in Florida, now is the best time, especially with the beautiful springtime weather. It is a perfect time to enjoy all the fun in the sun that Florida offers plus amazing temperatures, warm, but still breezy enough to be enjoyable!

Below is a little preview of this luxury 199-room gem that just opened April 2019 -the NEW Isla Bella Beach Resort.

BE YOUR OWN HERO - 20 AFFIRMATIONS

https://www.zazzle.com/z/1qh2j?rf=238841869848909290
Sometimes we just need to come to terms with the fact that no one is going to come in and "save us."  Nobody can truly make you happy or make you successful, unless you:

 1) Want it; 2) Work for it; 3) Believe in it!

Sometimes we just need a little positive affirmation and reminder that we are good enough.  That we can achieve anything we set our minds to.

Here are a few of my favorite positive thoughts and affirmations for you to enjoy and re-read when you need them:

1.  I Am Open and Ready to be Positive.
2.  I am in Control of my Feelings.
3.  No Matter How Hard it is, I Can Do it.
4.  I Am Smart.
5.  I Deserve to be Happy
6.  I Believe in Myself and my Goals.
7.  I am a Kind Person.
8.  Obstacles Help Me to Grow and Learn.
9.  I Stand Up for What I Believe in.
10. I Make Good Choices.
11. I Have the Power to be Happy
12. I Can Make a Difference in the World.
13. I Work Hard.
14. I am Honest.
15. I am Grateful for What I Have.
16. Today I am Going to be My Best Self.
17. I Am Prepared to be Successful.
18. It is Okay if I Make Mistakes.
19. I Like Myself for Who I Am.
20. Today is Going to be a Great Day!

Sometimes we just need to be our OWN hero!

DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

Recently, I was questioned as to why I spend so much time blogging. Why I spend countless amount of time on my computer. Well, guess, what, I like it! It's therapeutic for ME! It lets me vent and share and do what I love, and that is to write. I also have the added benefit of being able to benefit from a little affiliate advertising and sponsored ads, as trivial as that may seem to some. It makes ME happy! And to be perfectly honest, the "real" world right now seems a little scary with everything going on politically and globally.  So, yea, sharing recipes, pictures, fun stories and reviews is a lot more entertaining.

Ultimately, for me, it is not about writing reviews on child locks or carpet companies, or finding the best recipe out there. It is about doing what I enjoy! It is about the process, the journey.

I believe that the purpose of life is to find what makes you happy and to do just that. I mean, really, doesn't everyone want to do what makes them happy?  Like finding a partner to make you happy;  finding a job that makes you happy; choosing a hobby that makes you happy; seeing your kids grow up to be happy? So then, why not do something that actually makes you happy?

Whether it's yoga, reading, scrap-booking, biking, dancing, listening to music, fund-raising, cooking, whatever it is, find your passion and DO IT! Do not judge others for going after their passion and mocking what they love to do. Find something YOU love to do and go for it.

Maybe some day, I will write that book I've always wanted to write, but in the interim, I blog and I enjoy it.

Find your happy....BE INSPIRED

FAMILY OVER EVERYTHING

FOE - Family Over Everything: Surrounding your kids with the love of family is so important! Whether it is with cousins, older siblings, grandparents, or friends, who are like family - having that feeling - that sense of "family" is an amazing emotional motivator. It helps a child (and even an adult) feel loved and welcomed and makes them feel part of something bigger.

If you have family close by, treasure them, spend time with them. If they are not close, reach out and call. Appreciate those who love you unconditionally! ❤️πŸ™πŸ»

LIFE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE WONDERFUL TO BE PERFECT

A while ago, I wrote an article on my other blog, ThePowertobeHappy.com about how life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful. Today, I would like to share it with you Warriors!

Some days do you wake up and wonder , "Just what am I doing? Is this all worth it?"  Working hard to make a living, trying to blend into the "rat-race," shuffling the kids back and forth between activities and sports, with barely any free time for yourself.  I know, I do!
Blue Box
There are just some days when I feel down and "blue" and can't see the silver lining. This tends to happen on Monday mornings or when things aren't going my way (fast enough.)
It is usually when I am in my "own little world," not really participating productively in society, that I let myself get trapped in that "blue box."

Life can sometimes seem like one disappointment after another, but really, if we change our lens, and look at all the good and positive things in our lives, it can and will change our perspective.  It is so important to have a goal, to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.
Even though, I do wake up some days feeling like something is wrong with the entire world, I've learned that "life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful."  I have learned that in moments like this, that's when it's time to make the EXTRA effort to get out and do something positive.  I have learned that three people have the power to make me happy: Me, Myself & I!

That's right only YOU and I, individually, have the power to make ourselves happy.  And remember, life doesn't have to be perfect all the time, you just have to recognize and appreciate what you do have and show gratitude everyday for it!  This does not mean you are going to float around like "Mary Poppins" every day but it will help you will start your day off with a little more pizzazz and appreciation for the life you live, especially when you have dreams and goals to pursue.

Here is a list of things I want to share with you, that you may want to try to help you get back into the "swing of things."  Remember, YOU always have the power to be happy.

"What you think, you attract!"

10 TIPS TO BOOST YOUR DAY(S) INTO A HAPPY DAY(S):

1. Make a list of all the things you love and appreciate in your life (look at this list and remember it!)
2. Make a conscious effort to schedule time to do sometime YOU enjoy (art, crafts, yoga, write etc...)
3. Treat yourself to your favorite lunch or dinner.
4. Call or visit an old friend - sometimes the best therapy is just talking to someone you trust or like.
5. Find a way to laugh, whether it's listening to jokes (audio) or going to a comedy show.
6. Read something inspiring and motivational.
7. Start a fun or creative project. Something that you’re excited about, that will make you smile.
8. Write about how you feel, whether you have a blog or not. Talk about the things that make you feel
down or upset. Whether you share it or not, is not the point. It is cathartic to write out
your feelings. Post it, don’t post it, whatever you choose to do, just get it out of your system.
9.  Watch that movie that you've wanted to see for a while now, even if it's requires getting a sitter.
10. Go for a walk, somewhere were you can appreciate nature (tree, beach, mountain, by a lake etc...)

These are just a few things you can do to help you get a jump-start to your happy frame of mind.   Everyday will not always be good but you can definitely find the good in every day.  You are attracting what you think on a daily basis.  You have the power...use it wisely!

Follow your dreams, set a goal, one day at a time.  The key is to find your purpose or your passion and life will become more exhilarating every day!

READY FOR YOGA

Namaste-woman-jaymeEverywhere I read, it says how good Yoga is for you. Well, this is the year that I am going to start!  The benefits are many. Despite the fact that I am so out of shape, I am going to start little by little, perhaps with "chair yoga."

Chair Yoga
Chair Yoga is a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting on a chair, or standing using a chair for support. It is in the process of being recognized formally as a type of yoga distinct from other types, such as Iyengar Yoga or Ashtanga yoga. Often the poses, or Asanas, are often adaptations of Hatha yoga poses.

"In Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism the word yoga means "spiritual discipline". People often associate yoga with the postures and stances that make up the physical activity of the exercise, but after closer inspection it becomes clear that there are many more aspects of yoga. It is an activity that has been practiced for thousands of years, and it is something that has evolved and changed overtime. Different factions of yoga have developed since its conception."

"The traditional purpose of Yoga, however, has always been to bring about a profound transformation in the person through the transcendence of the ego," (Feuerstein 3)

Modern Yoga

Modern yoga is based on five basic principles that were created by Swami Sivananda.
  • Proper relaxation
  • Proper exercise
  • Proper breathing
  • Proper diet
  • Positive thinking and meditation
Recently, I read an article in the Huffington Post about how Yoga can make you happier!  Here is the article:

By Monique Minahan
When I first started practicing yoga, I was still digging my way out of a deep cavern of grief. Something about this unusual method of twists, turns, and upside downs kept calling me back. I didn't know what it was initially, but as I began to settle into my body, things began to shift in my life.
I think of it as going from a paralyzed life to a walking life. If you are already able to walk and then begin to run, that's liberating. If you are paralyzed and then begin to walk, that's a miracle.
2013-01-17-Gaiam4This was my experience with the power and patience of yoga. Learning how to walk into my life, transition from grief to peace, and eventually to happiness.
The peace and happiness we access on our mats is no accident. Although many write it off as just another exercise-induced dopamine high, yoga goes deeper than that. The mind-body connection created in yoga facilitates change at a cellular level. Cellular memory is the idea that our bodies hold our histories.

Before you brush this off as far-fetched, consider that scientists and physicians have found compelling evidence that the brain and body send messages to each other through neuropeptides and receptors. Neurocardiology is a discipline that studies the communicative relationship between the brain and the heart.

Our nervous systems are what we're tapping into in yoga. Retraining how psychological or emotional triggers set off our flight-or-fight response allows us the opportunity to rewire our sympathetic nervous system. The deep breathing practiced in yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, producing a calming, relaxed effect.

The relationship between head and heart has been described as a "dynamic, ongoing, two-way dialogue with each organ continuously influencing the other's function."

When we weave positive intention into our movements, we are imprinting these thoughts, not only into our minds, but into our bodies. We are effecting change on our mat that will allow for change off our mat.

Much of our unhappiness as humans comes from our thoughts or feelings. We judge our experiences in terms of good or bad. We experience feelings of inadequacy, powerlessness, embarrassment, humiliation, and we often keep track of what we don't have more than what we do have.
A full practice of yoga, including meditation, gently removes these weights from our minds and our bodies. Not only does it remove them, but with time it can begin to reshape our attitudes, views, and thoughts.

The physical postures take us into our bodies in a non-judgmental way. From this neutral viewpoint, we can see huge possibility. Without being blocked by preconceived ideas of what we can or cannot do, we are free to try, to fall, to play, and to grow.

Physically, yoga asks one simple thing of us: Show up. Show up in mind, body, and spirit. These are things we can skimp on in other areas of life. Perhaps we show up in body to work or a conversation, but our minds are somewhere else. At times we show up mentally to a project, while our bodies slouch for hours, forgotten. The integration in yoga of all these parts creates the prerequisite unity and connection required for happiness to bloom.

Once we feel unified and connected, we will access a deep well of joy that does not diminish when shared. Yoga doesn't just lift our spirits. It lifts our lives. It opens our eyes to the essence of who we are, and therein lies peace. Therein lies the happiness.
